Over four intrigue-filled seasons, the driving emotion of ‘Scotland’ set the tone as the opening theme for Reign, the CW’s period drama about the young Mary Queen of Scots. Consistently one of the most requested unreleased song on Tunefind over the past few years, previously fans had to make do with brief versions ripped from the show, or a rare live performance by the band.

Reign music supervisor Madonna Wade-Reed shares, “One of the executive producers, Brad Silberling, knew someone who worked with the band. ‘Scotland’ was a song that was being worked on and ended up being perfect for the series, so it was turned into the main title song.”

About the song, Wesley Schultz of The Lumineers recalls, “In the long pursuit of music, I remember working at a coffee shop, deli and restaurant to make the ends meet. The song was born out of this feeling that the world, the people around you, will often just not understand you: ‘You could/never/feel my story/it’s all you know.’ It became a rally cry to try to persevere – ‘I will not fold/she’s in control.'”

“The song also was special to us because it had this beautiful driving rhythm that Jer [Jeremiah Fraites] played that reminded us of battle drums, like something out of Braveheart – hence the strange name – Scotland,” recalls Schultz.

In addition to providing the iconic theme song, other tracks by The Lumineers were featured throughout the series. As the show came to an end last year, music supervisor Madonna Wade-Reed shared her favorite music moments from Reign, including The Lumineers’ ‘Charlie Boy’ and Vitamin String Quartet’s cover of ‘Stubborn Love.’

A scruffy independent Americana trio out of Denver, The Lumineers were founded in 2005 by Wesley Schultz (lead vocals, guitar) and Jeremiah Fraites (drums, percussion). Cellist and vocalist Neyla Pekarek joined the band in 2010.

Following the huge success of their addictive earworm ‘Ho Hey’ in 2012, The Lumineers gained a passionate fan base. Even President Obama weighed in, putting the band’s second #1 hit, ‘Stubborn Love’ on his presidential playlist, alongside the likes of Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell and Nina Simone.

The Lumineers previously released two albums on U.S. indie label Dualtone Records. Their self-titled first album, The Lumineers, was released in 2012 and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. It has been certified triple platinum in the U.S. and Canada. Their second album, Cleopatra, was released in 2016 and debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200. It is currently certified Platinum in the U.S. C-Sides marks their third release, and also includes the tracks ‘For Fra’ and ‘Visions of China.’

Reigns is a strategy video game developed by Nerial and published by Devolver Digital. Set in a fictional medieval world, it places the player in the role of a monarch who rules the kingdom by accepting or rejecting suggestions from advisors. The game was released digitally for Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Microsoft Windows in August 2016.

A sequel, titled Reigns: Her Majesty, in which the player acts as a queen consort, was released in December 2017. Reigns and its sequel were released for Nintendo Switch, under the collective title Reigns: Kings & Queens, in September 2018.[1] A third entry in the Reigns series, Reigns: Game of Thrones, was released in October 2018.[2]

Gameplay[edit]

Assuming the role of a medieval king, the player swipes left or right on a card depicting an advisor, in order to accept or reject their suggestion. Each decision will have a consequence, changing the balance between the four pillars of the society: The church, the people, the military, and wealth. The king's reign ends whenever one of the four metric bars becomes full or empty, and the game continues with the player controlling their heir.[3][4] Various in-game events can also lead to the king's demise.

Throughout the course of the game, the player may experience different kinds of events, which are scripted or caused by the player's decisions. Such events can have one-time or recurring effects on the game, such as causing the death of the next advisor if their suggestion is rejected.[5]

Development[edit]

The game was developed by London-based game studio Nerial. In an opinion piece published on Polygon, François Alliot, lead developer of the game, commented that the team wanted to 'mock the way our societies tend to deal with complexity', citing Brexit as an example. The developers intended to make the player feel the disconnect between the simplicity of the 'swipe' control scheme and the consequences their decisions lead to, which inevitably result in the king's demise at the end of each reign.[6]

The interactive soundtrack of the game, titled Songs of Reigns, is available on Steam.[7]

According to Metacritic, Reigns has garnered 'generally favorable' reviews. Reviewers praised the simplicity of its control scheme, noting its similarity to the 'Swipe' interface in social app Tinder.[10][3] However, Alex Hern from The Guardian found certain choices in the game 'nonsensical', and of unclear consequences.[3]

The game won the international competition at the 2017 Ludicious convention.[12] It was nominated for 'Best Mobile Game' of Unity Awards 2016, and 'Use of Narrative' of Develop Awards 2016.[13][14]
